This project should not have happened in the way that it did.
In October 2020, for his 12th birthday, Toby was diagnosed with Fibrolamellar Hepticelular Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the liver. Unlike most cancers of the liver, it occurs with greater frequency in adolescents and young adults who are otherwise healthy. He died three months later on January 2, 2021.
He was John and Wendy’s grandson. Alain and Bernice’s nephew and cousin to their children.
He was the son of Kevin and Emily, their youngest child and brother to his siblings.
Toby’s death brought new life values into focus, and redefined for us what “home” is, and could be. One of the things Toby said during his treatment is that “the hospital is where the help is, but home is where the happiness is.”
It is our hope that we’ll find new happiness within this project, as we build new homes for ourselves.
